In an effort to be more heart friendly, and because you are supposed to eat breakfast (pleh) I am trying to eat a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast every day. The problem: I like a little oatmeal with my brown sugar and butter or in a cookie or Janice Keith's Oatmeal Cake (seriously, if you haven't tried oatmeal cake, look up "Alice Sowder Keith's Oatmeal Cake" in the church cookbook-SO GOOD!) What's a girl to do?
Well, I've been experimenting and I've come up with an edible bowl of oatmeal without all the sugar and butter. I make the HUGE heart healthy quick recipe (3/4 cup oatmeal, 3/4 Horizon organic milk-it has to be organic milk it just tastes 1,000 times better, 3/4 water). I add 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla, mix and microwave for 1 1/2-2 minutes. I then add one teaspoon brown sugar, a little pumpkin pie spice, and tons of cinnamon. Voila! Edible, halfway enjoyable oatmeal without the extra sugar and butter. The milk does add calories and fat, but I need the calcium for my old bones and it makes the oatmeal creamier. If you haven't tried Horizon Organic 2% or fat free milk, give it a try. I am not a milk drinker, so regular milk always smells bad to me - Horizon doesn't and it will keep longer in the fridge. Hope my heart appreciates it. My taste buds are still a little mad.

We can always count on Pam to make the most boring things taste better:) You're doing your heart good...way to go!
Oooh, I love real oatmeal with some raisins, bananas, brown sugar, vanilla, butter and a tiny dollop of maple syrup...probably not super healthy, but it sure warms me up inside!! :)
That sounds delicious!! We drink Braum's Whole Milk around here ... I wish I could say it was because we have a baby in the house, but Josh and I LOVE Braum's Whole Milk! Between the three of us, we go through unheard of amounts of milk each week. He he. :)
Good for you for being heart healthy! Oatmeal is great for that!!
You know Chuckie from "Rugrats" is scared of that Quaker man. I was always scared of the Yahtzee man myself.
I love oatmeal! I enjoy adding coconut or honey peanut butter. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
So, I typically notice your sidebar artwork before I read your posts. I should know by now that the art usually has some tie to the theme of your post, but I wasn't thinking about that. I looked at the art for the longest time, thinking, that is one terrible Peter Max piece, why would she choose that? Then, I read your post, and it makes sense. However, I still don't care for the work, do you? I normally enjoy his work, just not this one. I have yet to come across a piece with a cliche symbol that I can connect with, hmm.
Oh, and I love QandLa's idea to put coconut in oatmeal. That sounds delightful!
Your heart is thanking you and the taste buds will get over it. Adding coconut sounds good.
